iCloud vs MobileMe

What was (and it is still for a while ) mobile Me:

  • users can store and share at file/folder level their data (documents, images and video)
  • users can keep in sync their data on all apple devices (iphone, ipad and mac laptops or desktops)
  • users may have as many websites as they wish with on .me domain (like Google, Opera, WordPress) Any of their websites can be build using Apple templates and tools  and an own doman name ca be link to any of websites built on Apple platform
  • $119 / y subscription was required and 15Gb space was allocated to any users.

What iCloud is :

At first sight it appears to be a step backwards:

  • there is not website builder (Google provide website builder) – iWeb Publishing
  • there is no Gallery (files level management – files organised in folders structure)
  • there is no iDisk (files level management – files organised in folders structure)
  • will be free accounts (no subscription) with only 5Gb space allocated – Google gives to its users 7GB and many goodies such as: documents, own domain name email, video and phot sharing and much more

What can put iCloud in top of any cloud system is that Apple told us that basically they will put on market not another sharing platform but an OS running in Cloud.

iCloud is Apple’s new cloud service. iCloud stores users music, photos, apps, calendars, and documents and wirelessly pushes them to all users devices. iCloud integrates seamlessly with your apps  and  everything happens automatically.

iCloud will be free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users. (limited storage)

You may think that Google is doing more or less the same with its Chrome and Chrome notebook. It is not quite true. Apple and its iCloud allow data sync between any apple device(iphone, ipad, mac laptp or desktop) at application level.

iCloud will not be another DropBox or similar.

iClous will allow real time sync without asking its user to think about it.

iCloud will allow its users to take advantage of data sync on any apple device and to use their devices like internet terminals but to benefit of the full power of their apple devices.

New in iCloud:

  • iTunes in the Cloud
  • Photo Stream
  • Documents in the Cloud
  • Automatic downloads and purchase history for apps and books
  • Backup and restore

Transition from mobileMe to iCloud:

  • MobileMe email address is kept. If user has an active MobileMe account when he will sign up for iCloud, he will be able to keep your me.com or mac.com email address and move the MobileMe mail, contacts, and calendars, as well as your bookmarks, to the new service.  Apple will provide details and instructions on how to make the move.
  • Owner of MobileMe account will not be able to continue publishing iWeb sites to MobileMe. All websites user may have on iWeb must be transfered to another web hosting service.
  • All photos user may have on MobileMe Gallery must be saved locally.  User can sync the Gallery photos to his iPhoto library. User may download his photos and movies from the web.
  • All it was on iDisk must be saved locally as well.
  • Any user have 5GB available in iCloud for free If the user data on iDisk is bigger then user must delete par of his data or he must buy extra storage.
  • There is not Family pack available (as plan). Users who have Family pack bought can create accounts on MobileMe and all will be transferred later to iCloud (5Gb space)
